The Kenya Small and Companion Animal Veterinary Association (KESCAVA) was an initiative born in August 2014 and officially launched on 30th January 2015 as a specialized branch of the Kenya Veterinary Association (KVA), the national professional association of veterinary surgeons in Kenya.
The launch saw an interim committee take charge for one year followed by a Special General Meeting in 2016 that elected its first full executive committee led by Prof. Susan Mbugua as the Chairman. Its membership base consists of veterinarians who are involved in various sectors of the profession, mainly, companion animal practice, pharmaceutical industry, wildlife, animal welfare, academia, and research.
The membership has grown from a modest number of 49 at the end of 2015 to a current membership of 150. In 2022, the membership category has been expanded to include veterinary interns. KESCAVA is a full member of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) and is also affiliated with the African Small and Companion Animal Network (AFSCAN – an initiative of the WSAVA Foundation).
