From the 20th to the 23rd of March 2024, the vibrant city of Nairobi played host to a gathering of brilliant minds in the field of veterinary medicine. The Small Animal Conference Room at the University of Nairobi became a hub of knowledge, during the just-concluded East African Small Animal Conference (EASAC). This prestigious event, which garnered immense praise, was not only a testament to KESCAVA’s dedication to small animal healthcare but also a celebration of collaborative efforts aimed at advancing veterinary excellence.

The EASAC Conference was not only a beacon of learning, offering attendees a comprehensive platform to share best practices and engage in insightful discussions, but it also hosted our Annual General Meeting (AGM). One of the standout features of this conference was its accreditation for 21 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points, underlining its immense value for veterinary professionals seeking to enhance their expertise and stay abreast of industry trends.

Throughout the conference, participants were treated to a diverse array of sessions, practical workshops, and keynote speeches delivered by eminent speakers from across the globe. Topics ranged from managing dermatological conditions in cats and dogs, approaches to scaling and crusting dermatoses in dogs, insights into autoimmune and immune-mediated diseases in dogs and cats, identifying often overlooked painful dental problems in small animals, and effective pain assessment techniques in veterinary practice. These discussions not only deepened attendees’ understanding of key challenges but also empowered them with practical knowledge and skills to enhance patient care for small companion animals.

A key highlight of the EASAC Conference was the interactive nature of the sessions, fostering lively debates and encouraging knowledge exchange among attendees. Networking opportunities were abundant, allowing veterinarians, researchers, and industry stakeholders to forge meaningful connections and collaborations to shape the future of small animal healthcare in East Africa and beyond.

The success of the EASAC Conference would not have been possible without the generous support and partnership of esteemed organizations. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA), African Small Companion Animal Network (AFSCAN), Kenya Veterinary Board (KVB), and Kenya Veterinary Association (KVA) for their unwavering commitment to advancing veterinary education and small animal practice in the region.

Special recognition is also due to our valued sponsors – CKL Africa Ltd, Elgon Kenya Limited, and Caroga Pharma Limited – whose contributions were instrumental in making this event a resounding success. Their dedication to fostering innovation and excellence in small animal practice is truly commendable.

As we reflect on the enriching experiences, discussions, and invaluable connections forged during the EASAC Conference 2024, we look forward with optimism to a future where collaborative efforts continue to drive progress and elevate standards in small companion animal practice. Together, we are charting a path toward healthy and happy small animal companions. Until the next one, let us carry forth the spirit of commitment, collaboration, and compassion that defines our noble profession.
